Theatre In The ArcadeTheatre in the ARCADEThe Youth Theatre performed A Dog’s Life - a one-act play by Pam Valentine as part of Theatre in The Arcade.

Centred around the lives of four dogs in a re-homing centre: Ginger, a puppy, found herself in the main block as there was no room in the puppy block. She was obsessed by food. Ben, the dog of a tramp who had died, was confused as to why he was taken from his master and placed in the kennels. Fritz, an ex-Army dog who hated children took his fun from the fat Fifi, a French poodle, who was in the kennel beside him. However, when a visitor came round to view the dogs, what happened is not what you might think ....

Since it was first published in 2000, this play has won a number of awards at one-act festivals around the country.  One reviewer on amazon.co.uk described this play as follows: -

  • This play is first and foremost a good read. It's a well written and well structured play about 4 dogs in a pound, the pound keeper and a lady who comes to buy a dog.

  • It's an accessible, funny and touching script, which offers good opportunities for some nice character studies by the actors. Each dog has a real personality, they aren't just caricatures. The audience feels empathy for all the roles, and although there is plenty of light hearted laughter there is also the opportunity to shed a tear.

  • The puppy, whose life revolves around food, is bouncy, energetic and eager. "Is it food? Is it? Is it? Is it?" She provides most of the laughs. The pathos comes from the old tramp's dog, Ben, when he discovers that his master has died and won't be coming for him.

  • This play appeals to all age groups, the set, costumes and effects required are minimal, and it's well worth a look.

First Rehearsal was Monday 8th June at the JOG Community Centre at  8.45 - 10pm
