The Young Performers group exists for young children who might like to express themselves through musical theatre and is a great way to introduce them to the performing arts.

The Young Performers Theatre is open to children aged 6 to 8 years who come from the community of Hungerford and surrounding Towns and Villages. This section was started in 2003 by Lynette Gridley, who directed successful productions for the first five years.  Roushka Munt, a drama graduate of Southampton University, took over from Lynette in 2007.

Each year the group aims to put on a show at Easter, which begins rehearsal during the previous September.  Please Click here to find out more about past productions..

NEXT PRODUCTION - The Fate of King Minos
Saturday 28th March 2009 at 2.30pm - Croft Hall

MinatorSynopsis - When fate is decided by the gods one would hope they’d take it more seriously than a game of snap. Unfortunately for King Minos this is not the case.

King Minos, with help from the famous inventor, Daedalus, built a great Labyrinth below Crete to house the frightening Minotaur. Every year Athenian’s were sent to feed the Monster. One year the hero Theseus was sent to be devoured but instead he defeated the beast and, after being instructed by Daedalus and Ariadne, King Minos’ daughter, was able to escape the labyrinth. When Minos discovered that Daedalus had helped he locked Daedalus and his son, Icarus in the tallest tower but Daedalus cleverly built two pairs of wings so he and Icarus were able to fly away. However, Icarus flew too close to the sun and the wax, which held the wings together, melted, and he fell into the sea. Daedalus avenges his son’s death by finally overpowering King Minos and he is finally free.

This play, written specifically for the Young Performers, includes several well-known Greek myths including that of Theseus and the Minotaur and it gives both boys and girls the chance to be gods, heroes, inventors and kings.

  • Rehearsals are taking place for 5-8 year olds on Saturdays 11am- 12 noon in the community centre.

LAST PRODUCTION

  • The last production was an adaptation of the classic story Beowulf - a new play by Hoffi Munt.

  • The performance on Saturday 29th March delighted a large audience at the John O’Gaunt Community Technology College, Priory Road, Hungerford.

    • Tickets at £3 each were available from the Box Office: Crown Needlework, 115 High Street, Hungerford .

    • Beowulf is the tale of a hero who faces three terrible monsters; first the monster Grendel who is terrifying the Danes, then Grendel's mother who seeks revenge for her son's death and finally a dragon who threatens Beowulf's own people. In this play adaptation there were great roles for boys and girls giving the cast a chance to work with puppets, dress up as a dragon and help Beowulf complete his heroic story.

  • Rehearsals were on Mondays , 5.30-6.30pm at the JOG Youth and Community Centre.
