Love Begins at Fifty - A Modern Farce in Two Acts by Raymond Hopkins

Love Begins at 50 cast photoThis very successful show ran on a Friday and Saturday 6/7 June 2008 and was sold out on both nights.  The packed audiences enjoyed laughing throughout this hilarious play.  Many commented that the Croft Hall provided a really enjoyable audience experience.  Our condolences to those who were not able to get in and join in with the fun: Next time the secret is to book early!

The author of the play, Raymond Hopkins, joined us on the Saturday Night and we were thrilled when he told us that it was an excellent production.  He donates his share of the proceeds to Multiple Sclerosis research (over £2000 to date) so we were glad to be able to help such a good cause.

Both evenings we watched as the capacity audience filed out of the hall and everyone was smiling.  Many people commented on how much they had enjoyed the show, saying that it was extremely funny.

Some comments overheard from the audience ...........

  • One gentleman, who laughed along with his wife for the entire show, was heard to say ' that was the best £5 I have spent in years'

  • It was particularly amusing to have Rev. Sawyer in the audience and to witness his reaction to the references to 'The Vicar'

  • One lady said she had expected the odd punch line, but couldn't stop laughing at all the innuendos!  She thought the cast were brilliant, were well cast and performed the play so well, it was a shame we couldn't take it on tour!!

Clive Debanks (played by Paul Hyde) was approaching his fiftieth birthday. Stuck in a long but dull marriage, he decided to have a final fling before settling down to old age. He responded to three lonely-hearts ads in the local paper and arranged to meet them all at his house one night, while his wife was away. Sounds like a recipe for disaster, and the stuff of which classic farces are made...................

  • On the day before the opening night there was a massive turnout to help get the Croft Hall ready and to build the set.  Things went well and the set was installed and rigged for sound in time for the actors to run through one scene before 11:00.  A HUGE THANK YOU to everyone who turned out.  It was a great community effort.

  • At each performance there were also many people working tirelessly behind the scenes and front of house to make everything run smoothly.  BIG THANKS go to all the people who helped make everything go so well at each performance.

  • Likewise BIG THANKS are due to everyone who stayed behind after the last performance to help strip and remove the set.  We got just about everything down, tidied and out of the hall then transported by trailer and put away in the storage facility by 11:30 the same night.  This left only a few things to sort out on the following day so no early call on Sunday for many people!

What the Press Said about this play...

"... a hilarious and unmissable treat... a beautifully crafted comedy that never goes off the boil for a second... unmissable evening of laughter for everyone to enjoy... roller coaster ride of events."

- Dorset Echo
- Weymouth Drama Club

"Sideswipe at marital bliss simply a hoot... A belly-laughing full house... could identify with Hopkins' corking script... a stack of witty one-liners... A pure gem of comedy... terrific production!"

- Grantham Today
- St. Peter's Hill Players

"... highly amusing and surprisingly touching comedy... the audience laughed till they cried."

- Daily Echo (Southbourne)

"Love begins At 50 is a simple, funny but clever farce which rings true at so many points, you can imagine the same scenarios being acted out in hundreds of homes around the country. You may even recognize it in your own... this funny farce is not to be missed."

- Torquay Herald Express

" ... got plenty of fun out of this original and praiseworthy script."

- Sidmouth Herald

"The success of a farce can be measured by the reaction of its audience. So saying, the laughter which came from the church hall recently declared that Raymond Hopkins’ play, through the endeavours of the Stratford Players, had all the right ingredients."

- Stratford Players

"As for the play, it's a modern farce, an up-lifting comedy with a magical mix of madness, guilt, deceit, eccentricity, decency, integrity, hope and love."

- West Sussex Gazette

"Love Begins At 50 is a fast and furious hilarious farce which is sure to keep the audience amused."

- Rhyl Prestatyn

"Raymond Hopkins provided the company with a play that had a good plot and some very funny lines... I understand he has written several other plays and I trust they all get performed especially if they are as funny as this one is."

- Brackley Production
- Review by Robin Hinton Brewer... Noda

"The action was fast and furious in this hilarious farce from the opening lines to the end, interlaced with comedy, pathos and wit delivered by each of the characters invoking side-splitting laughter in the audience... From the performance I witnessed I would encourage the Society to make modern farce a regular calendar date in their future productions."

- Wrexham Musical Theatre Society review

"They are inviting people to come and enjoy a 'frenetic, funny farce with side-splitting laughter and a fast and furious pace'."

- Reviewed by Banbury Guardian

"This is one of the most frenetically funny farces I have reviewed for some time, up to the standards of the best Ray Cooney... side-splitting laughter... a fast and furious farce which provides hilarious opportunities. "
